Top Axe Throwing Games and How To Play

Top Axe Throwing Games and How To Play

There are a lot of reasons why axe throwing is such an enjoyable activity. Anyone, from a beginner to an expert, will have fun in this sport, which is why it’s a great way to bring people together.

At Axe Thro Co, you will get to play the original backyard sport of axe throwing, as defined by the IATF. But you also have the option to play a large variety of other games that work great with an axe and a target, perfect for any group event!

The Target

Before jumping into how each game works, let’s quickly overview the target. This is an example of a typical IATF axe throwing target:

When you stick your axe in the center circle with black paint, that is called a bull’s eye and is usually worth 5 points. In the red (outside the black) is 3, in the blue (outside the red) is 1. The green dots toward the top of the target are called “clutch” and are usually worth 7 points. If the axe sticks anywhere outside any of these circles, that would be a “0”, and if the axe doesn’t stick it is considered a “drop”.

Cricket

Cricket can be played either 1 on 1 or in teams. The goal is to hit each area on the target 3 times, and the first team to do so wins.

Typically, the areas you need to hit are “0”, “1”, “3”, and “bull’s eye”. Every time you hit one of these areas, your team gets a mark next to the corresponding value on the scoreboard. Once you have 3 marks next to a value, that area of the target will no longer count for anything if you hit it again.

If you want a shorter version, you can take away the “0” from the predetermined areas needed to hit. Or you can add a challenge by adding in the “clutch”.

Zombies vs Humans

This game can be played 1 on 1 or in teams. There is only one combined score in this game, starting at 0. The zombies points are always negative, and the humans points are always positive. If the score gets to +15 then the humans win, if the score gets to -15 then the zombies win.

Around the World

Around the World can be played 1 on 1 or in teams. The goal is to hit each area of the board in order, going from the outside in, then back out again. So, your team needs to hit 0, 1, 3, 5, 3, 1, 0 in that order; the first team to accomplish this wins.

If you miss, you do not have to start over. You will stay where you are in the sequence.

21

21 can be played 1 on 1 or in teams. As you might expect, the first team to 21 points wins the game. However, there are a few other rules to make it more interesting.

First, you need to hit 21 exactly. If you go over, then the last throw will not count. For example, if you have 20 points and hit a bull’s eye, your score will remain at 20.

Also, you will set 3 predetermined numbers that you will need to hit along the way to 21. The players can take turns choosing these numbers before the game starts. Let’s say 6, 10, and 14 are chosen. Your team will need to get your score to exactly 6 points before moving on to 10, and so on until you get to 21. So if you have 5 points and hit a “3”, your score will remain at 5.

To make the game go quicker, you can also choose just 1 or 2 numbers that need to be hit on the way to 21.

Blackjack

Blackjack is another game that can be played 1 on 1 or in teams, and involves a target of 21 points. Each team gets a total of 10 throws, and the team closest to 21 after 10 throws wins. However, if at any point during the game your team goes over 21, then you have now busted and are immediately eliminated.

The scoring is also slightly different for 2 reasons. Normally the area you hit is considered to be where the majority of the axe is embedded in the wood, but in Blackjack your axe must be 100% within a particular scoring zone, otherwise you get 0. For example, if your axe is stuck with part of the blade in the red circle, and part of it outside the red circle going into the blue area, then that throw would be worth 0 points.

The other difference is that if you drop your axe, then that throw is worth negative 4 points. So if you get to 21 before the 10 throws are completed, then you will need to continue sticking your axe in the “0” area to stay at 21.

Landmines

Landmines can be played 1 on 1 or in teams. The first team to pass 50 points wins. However, there are “landmines” every 10 points, and if you hit a landmine then your team’s score goes down 10 points. So if you have 17 points and you hit a “3” to put your score at 20, you would then go back down to 10.

Yahtzee

Yahtzee must be played in teams of 4 people per team. It is one of the most fun games that can be played at an axe throwing facility. The only downsides are you need a decent size group of people in order to play, and the rules are a little more complicated than most other games. So we’ve got a whole other article explaining how the game works HERE.

With a lot of these games, you can also play several other variations. There are other games you can play as well, but the ones listed here are some of our favorites. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call. If you’re in San Diego and are particularly interested in any of these games, come on in and let us know what games you want to try.

San Diego Gun Ranges and Fun Alternatives

San Diego Gun Ranges and Fun Alternatives

Gun owners need a place to practice shooting, which can sometimes be more difficult to find than you’d expect (especially in recent times!)

The gun range near you could be closed at the time you want to go shoot. Maybe it’s open and you show up only to find all the lanes are full and the wait time is outrageously long!

This would not be good, but hopefully we can offer a solution that suits you.

The Gun Range San Diego

First, let’s talk about your best options for gun ranges.

The Gun Range San Diego is a top-of-the-line gun range with a fun, welcoming environment. Having been newly constructed in 2015, they have state-of-the-art range equipment and an ultra clean facility.

More importantly, the staff not only knows their stuff but are always friendly and focused on customer service.

They also offer just about anything you’d want from a gun range. That includes courses for beginner, intermediate, and advanced shooters, a fully stocked gun store, on-site gunsmithing, rentals, 11 different types of targets, hearing and eye protection, and more. Plus, they are conveniently located in central San Diego on Balboa Ave, just on the other side of Convoy St from Axe Thro Co.

The price to shoot at The Gun Range San Diego is $14 per hour for the first shooter on a lane, and $12 per hour for each additional shooter, with a maximum of 3 per lane.

Other gun ranges

Another option is Discount Gun Mart which has 2 locations: one near Mission Bay and the other in Santee. They offer lanes up to 25 yards, as well as classes and personalized instruction.

If you live closer to Power you could give PWG Range a try. PWG Range is the third largest indoor gun range in America, and caters to both experienced shooters and first-timers. They offer 14 different classes with options for beginner, intermediate, and advanced shooters.

Archery

If you want to get some shooting practice with a bow instead of a gun, you can also visit one of the archery ranges in San Diego.

The San Diego Archers maintain 2 ranges in Balboa Park. The fee is just $2 per archer which is paid to a collection box based on the honor system. The Morley Field Range is perfect for tournament practice. They also have a fun walking range set up in the canyon, called Balboa Park Rube Powell Archery Range.

Some other options are the Lake Poway Archery Range, or you can sign up for a class at Performance Archery in Miramar.

Axe Throwing

We have certainly noticed a lot of overlap between shooting enthusiasts and axe throwing enthusiasts. If you’re looking for an alternative to the shooting range, then you’ll definitely want to check out an axe throwing venue.

When you throw at Axe Thro Co, a coach will be with every step of the way. We’ll teach you the axe throwing basics, help you consistently stick your axe in the target, and show you a variety of fun axe throwing games.

Axe Thro Co is located in Kearny Mesa, less than a block away from The Gun Range San Diego. There are 12 lanes available for both walk-ins and group events, perfect for any occasion!

A Beginner’s Guide for How To Throw An Axe

A Beginner’s Guide for How To Throw An Axe

If you’re looking to throw some axes, whether it’s at an axe throwing facility or out in the woods, this guide will show you everything you need to know to have an absolute blast throwing axes accurately and safely.

An Overview of Axe Throwing

  1. The Sport – Axe throwing is a relatively new sport with rising popularity. The 2 major league types are IATF and WATL, with slight differences in the targets they use and the rules they follow. The basic idea is you throw your axe at a target, and the more accurate you are the more points you get.
  2. The Axes – Most throws are made with a hatchet, but a felling axe (big axe) is used sometimes as well. You can see the anatomy of an axe and IATF dimensions requirements below.

3. The Targets – When you go to an axe throwing venue, they will usually be using one of the following target types.

IATF Target: Going from the outer ring to the inner ring, you are awarded 1 point, 3 points, and 5 points for sticking your axe in the target. The green dots, or “clutch”, are worth 7 points when applicable.

WATL Target: Going from the outer ring to the inner ring, you are awarded 1 point, 2 points, 3 points, 4 points, and 6 points for sticking your axe in the target. The blue dots, or “killshots”, are worth 8 points when applicable.

4. Safety – There are a few key points to keep in mind when axe throwing to ensure everone’s safety.

How To Do a Static, Two-Handed Throw (with a hatchet)

  1. Use your dominant hand to pick up the axe with a loose but firm grip at the base of the axe handle.
  2. Place your opposite foot at the front of the throwing line, or 170 inches from the target.
  3. With the hand holding the axe, stretch your arm out in front of you with your fist in the bullseye.
  4. The axe should be positioned perpendicular to your forearm with your wrist locked.
  5. Wrap your other hand around your dominant hand for guidance and support.
  6. Draw the axe back over head while breathing in and transfer your weight to your back foot.
  7. Puff your chest, and lead with your chest as you begin to exhale moving your body and axe towards the target while transferring your weight to your front foot and release at the bullseye.

Corrections For Dropped Axes

A few reasons your axe might not stick in the board would be over-rotating, wrist flicking (a type of over-rotating), under-rotating, or pancaking (land on the side of the axe face).

Over-rotating

Cues to correct over-rotating:

  1. Put your thumb up on the back of the handle with your dominant hand.
  2. Move your grip up on the axe ½ to1 inch (unless you have a problem with wrist flicking).
  3. Move closer to the target.

Wrist Flicking

With the static two-handed throw, you want to avoid flicking your wrists. Some things to look for that will hint that you’re wrist flicking are severe over-rotation, and if you’re throwing motion feels or looks kind of you’re shooting a basketball.

Cues to correct a wrist flick:

  1. Lock out your wrists
  2. Ensure your axe is perpendicular to your arms
  3. Flare your hands out and follow through with your arms like you are throwing dust or mud at the wall.
  4. Keep your elbows straighter.
  5. Move your grip lower on the axe.
  6. Lean forward when releasing the axe, throw hands toward the target and follow through bringing your arms down past your legs.
  7. Move closer to the board.

Under-rotating

Cues to correct under-rotating:

  1. Move your grip lower on the axe, placing your pinky below the shelf.
  2. Move further from the target.
  3. Bend your elbows on the drawback and bring the axe behind your head.

Pancaking

Cues to correct pancaking:

  1. Loosen your grip.
  2. Ensure the axe blade is straight at the target with a hand position at the start.
  3. Be sure to breathe in as you draw back, and breathe out as you release.
  4. Flare your hands out and away on the release.
  5. Square your hips and shoulders to the board.

Other Throwing Methods

Once you’ve got the two-handed static throw figured out, try giving some of these other throws a shot.

  1. Two-handed step throw
  2. One-handed step throw
  3. One-handed static throw

Here’s a video going over a one-handed throw.

How To Choose The Best Axe Throwing Spot Near You

How To Choose The Best Axe Throwing Spot Near You

Are you interested in trying axe throwing for the first time? Or have you already caught the bug and want to find the best venue for your axe throwing home?

Here are some things you can look for when deciding which venue near you is the best place to throw some axes.

Coaches

The first thing to look into is how the coaches operate. Do they teach you how to throw and then leave you on your own, or do they stay with you the whole time to help you continue to improve? Will they teach you a variety of throwing methods or just one way to do it?

Optimally there will be a coach for every 2 throwers. If just one person is coaching 4 or 6 people at a time then you will not be able to get the same level of attention. The coaches should also be helping score games for your group.

Safety

One of the most important factors is obviously safety. The coaches should be attentive the whole time, establishing proper safety guidelines. Many of the following points will relate back to safety as well.

Axes

The house axes should be high quality with sharp blades. Having sharper blades means you don’t have to throw as hard, which means there’s less chance for the axe to bounce back and hit anyone. The axes should also have wood handles which softens the bounce-back as well.

If you’re looking to maximize your fun, find a venue that offers a “big axe” in addition to hatchets.

Games/Entertainment

What kind of axe throwing games does the venue run? Is there a large variety or just 1 or 2? Can you do teams or only individuals?

Is there any other entertainment in the venue? If there’s a wait you’ll want to have other games/activities to occupy your time and keep it fun. Plus, if you have a large group it can be nice to mix it up in between your throwing turns.

Affiliation

Check to see if the venue is affiliated with any major axe throwing organizations. This is important for the credibility of their facility and operations. Having that affiliation makes it more likely that they are running things in a safe manner and that they know what they’re doing.

Facility

There are a few things you can take note of with regards to the structure of the facility and how it relates to safety.

First, the ceiling should be at least 14 feet high in case an axe slips out of your hands and goes way above the target – you don’t want any weird bounces off the ceiling. Next, the floors should be clearly marked with lines separating the throwing area and spectator area, as well as fault lines to prevent over-stepping.

There should also be strong barriers to keep everyone safe. Each arena should be partitioned by 15-foot floor to ceiling barriers, each lane should use periphery barriers to prevent axe ricochets, and the throwing area should be partitioned from spectators.

Events

Consider how the venue runs walk-ins and group events, and how you’re likely to plan your axe throwing venture. Make sure they can accommodate your group size, and that if you walk in they’ll be able to fit you in and provide just as great of an experience.

Food

Whether the place serves its own food or not, there should be space for you to have food if you want it. Especially if you’re throwing an axe throwing party, you’ll want some table space for cake, pizza, etc. Check to see if they’ll let you bring food in and if there’s enough space for it.

Parking

No matter where you’re planning on going, you’ll need a place to park! And if you’re going with a big group this can sometimes be a problem. So make sure there is plenty of parking available so you and your friends don’t end up having to walk several blocks after driving out there.

If you have any questions or would like further information on any of the topics mentioned above please reach out to us by phone at 833-968-8476 or email info@axethroco.com, we are happy to help you find the best place for your next event or answer any questions you have.

Why Axe Throwing is the Perfect Team Building Activity

Why Axe Throwing is the Perfect Team Building Activity

One of the best ways of shaking up the traditional team-building activities in San Diego, CA is axe throwing. Most people have never been to an axe-throwing bar. While you may be a tad apprehensive about hitting an axe bar for your next team-building activity, you will learn that axe throwing is actually very safe and offers many benefits more so when it comes to team building. Here are the top reasons why axe throwing is a great team-building activity.

Breaks everyday routine

As aforementioned, most people have never tried axe throwing. The activity will, therefore, be so different from anything any of your team members have ever tried. Being a new activity means you will be putting team members in a situation that shakes up their thinking. This will help develop new approaches to problems. The change will allow a different aspect of the personality of teammates allowing them to shine.

Build communication

Tournament-style walk-ins are available in an axe-throwing bar. This means teams can compete against each other or against other teams in a league. To succeed, the team members are forced to communicate. They also have to evaluate their techniques. Direct feedback during group events, large & small, will open communication avenues that may have stagnated in a normal office environment.

Exercise the whole body

Working in an ordinary office environment means you never get to exercise as much. Learning how to throw an axe and engaging in activities will definitely engage your whole body. The activities will not only involve your whole body but also activate neural connections which promotes creativity when it comes to tackling problems.

It’s fun

The best way to get the most from team building activities is to make the whole thing exciting. From coaching to actually throwing the axe, the whole experience is a lot of fun. Axe throwing ensures that team building is not a drag. You can count on an experience that is fun-filled and promotes bonding among coworkers.

It’s available all year

The best thing about the axe bar is that it is open all year round. You don’t have to plan your team-building activity around the dates when the event is possible. You can hit the axe bar any time.

Axe Throwing Games – How to Play “Yahtzee”

Axe Throwing Games - How to Play “Yahtzee”

Many of us have heard of the traditional board game Yahtzee where you roll dice, but Yahtzee has also been made into one of the lesser known axe throwing games. Even though it may not be as well known, Yahtzee is one of the most fun games you can play at an axe throwing venue, and it is designed for teams which makes it perfect for large groups.

The Setup

Start by assigning 4 people per team. Once the teams are set, each team will take turns completing a set of 6 tasks. On each task, each player gets 3 chances to complete their role for the task. Ideally all 4 players on the team will be throwing at the same time. Once each task is complete, it is the next team’s turn. The winner is the team that gets the highest score during their turn. Check out this video explanation.

The Tasks

Each player has an individual goal for each task, and you get 3 attempts to achieve the goal. All players will throw at the same time; if you hit your target then you will stop throwing until the team moves on to the next task. All players must hit their goal within their 3 attempts for the team to complete the task and be awarded points. If any player misses their 3 attempts, then the team gets 0 points for that task.

Here are the tasks:

    1. Each player scores a “1”
    2. Each player scores a “3”
    3. Each player scores a “5”
    4. Each player scores a “0”
    5. Team gets a “straight”
    6. Each player scores a “7” or “clutch”

Scoring a “1”, “3”, “5”, “0”, or “7”

This game is meant to be played under IATF rules. In order to “score”, your axe must stick in the board in the area that corresponds with the number of points you are going for. In the black is 5, in the red (outside the black) is 3, in the blue (outside the red) is 1, outside the blue and outside the green is 0, in the green is a clutch and worth 7.

Scoring a “straight”

A straight is defined as one player scoring a “1”, one player scoring a “3”, one player scoring a “5”, and one player scoring a “7”. Your team must determine each player’s target before the start of the task.

Scoring Rules for “Yahtzee” in Axe Throwing

Your team is awarded a certain amount of points when they successfully complete a task. If any single player does not hit their target within 3 attempts then the team will not be awarded any points for that task.

In addition, for each failed attempt for each player, 10 points are deducted from the team’s score. For example, if during a particular task Player A has 1 failed attempt, and Player B has 2 failed attempts, while Players C and D hit their target on the first attempt, then the team will get 30 points deducted from their score.

Here are the point allocations for each task:

    • Each player scores a “1” – 100 points
    • Each player scores a “3” – 300 points
    • Each player scores a “5” – 500 points
    • Each player scores a “0” – 600 points
    • Team gets a “straight” – 700 points
    • Each player scores a “7” or “clutch” – 1000 points

Example Walkthrough

Let’s say Albert, Bonnie, Clyde, and Dale are on a team. Their first task is to each score a “1”. They each get it on their first try except for Albert who gets it on his second try. The team is awarded 100 points for completing the task, but is then deducted 10 points for Albert’s miss. So their score after Task 1 is 90 points.

Now they must each score a “3”. Albert and Bonnie get it on their first try, Clyde gets it on his second try, and Dale misses all 3 attempts. Since Dale failed to hit his target, the team is awarded 0 points and they are deducted 40 points (1 miss from Clyde and 3 misses from Dale). The team’s score is now 50 points (90 – 40 = 50).

Now they must each score a “5”. Each player hits their target on the first attempt. So they are awarded 500 points with no deduction. Their score is now 550 points.

Now they must each score a “0”. Remember they must stick their axe in the board, a “drop” does not count as a “0”. Each player gets it on their first attempt except for Bonnie who gets it on her third attempt. The team is awarded 600 points and deducted 20 points for Bonnie’s 2 misses. Their overall score is now 1130 (550 + 600 – 20 = 1130).

Now the team must score a straight. They declare before they start that Albert is going for a “1”, Bonnie is going for a “3”, Clyde is going for a “5”, and Dale is going for a “7”. This time, Bonnie, Clyde and Dale all miss all 3 of their attempts while Albert got it on his second try. The team is awarded no points and is deducted 100 points (10 total misses). This brings the team’s overall score down to 1030.

The team is now on their final task where they must each score a “7”. Albert and Bonnie hit their target on the first try, Dale hits it on his second try, and Clyde misses all 3 attempts. Since Clyde missed all 3 attempts the team does not get any points, and they are deducted 40 points (4 total misses). So their final score is 990 points.

One Additional Rule

There is an extra rule used in competition, but that we treat as optional.

This rule ONLY applies to the final task where each player is going for clutch. If and only if 3 players hit their target and the last player misses his or her 3 attempts, then that last player will get a 4th attempt. If the 4th attempt is successful, then the team will be awarded 750 points (instead of 1000) for completing the task with an extra attempt taken.

So in our previous example on the final task, if Clyde had successfully hit his target on the 4th attempt, then the team would have been awarded 750 points and still deducted 40 points, making their final score 1740. If Clyde had missed the 4th attempt, then there would have been a 50 point deduction making their final score 980 points.
