How To Choose The Best Axe Throwing Spot Near You
Are you interested in trying axe throwing for the first time? Or have you already caught the bug and want to find the best venue for your axe throwing home?
Here are some things you can look for when deciding which venue near you is the best place to throw some axes.
Coaches
The first thing to look into is how the coaches operate. Do they teach you how to throw and then leave you on your own, or do they stay with you the whole time to help you continue to improve? Will they teach you a variety of throwing methods or just one way to do it?
Optimally there will be a coach for every 2 throwers. If just one person is coaching 4 or 6 people at a time then you will not be able to get the same level of attention. The coaches should also be helping score games for your group.
Safety
One of the most important factors is obviously safety. The coaches should be attentive the whole time, establishing proper safety guidelines. Many of the following points will relate back to safety as well.
Axes
The house axes should be high quality with sharp blades. Having sharper blades means you don’t have to throw as hard, which means there’s less chance for the axe to bounce back and hit anyone. The axes should also have wood handles which softens the bounce-back as well.
If you’re looking to maximize your fun, find a venue that offers a “big axe” in addition to hatchets.
Games/Entertainment
What kind of axe throwing games does the venue run? Is there a large variety or just 1 or 2? Can you do teams or only individuals?
Is there any other entertainment in the venue? If there’s a wait you’ll want to have other games/activities to occupy your time and keep it fun. Plus, if you have a large group it can be nice to mix it up in between your throwing turns.
Affiliation
Check to see if the venue is affiliated with any major axe throwing organizations. This is important for the credibility of their facility and operations. Having that affiliation makes it more likely that they are running things in a safe manner and that they know what they’re doing.
Facility
There are a few things you can take note of with regards to the structure of the facility and how it relates to safety.
First, the ceiling should be at least 14 feet high in case an axe slips out of your hands and goes way above the target – you don’t want any weird bounces off the ceiling. Next, the floors should be clearly marked with lines separating the throwing area and spectator area, as well as fault lines to prevent over-stepping.
There should also be strong barriers to keep everyone safe. Each arena should be partitioned by 15-foot floor to ceiling barriers, each lane should use periphery barriers to prevent axe ricochets, and the throwing area should be partitioned from spectators.
Events
Consider how the venue runs walk-ins and group events, and how you’re likely to plan your axe throwing venture. Make sure they can accommodate your group size, and that if you walk in they’ll be able to fit you in and provide just as great of an experience.
Food
Whether the place serves its own food or not, there should be space for you to have food if you want it. Especially if you’re throwing an axe throwing party, you’ll want some table space for cake, pizza, etc. Check to see if they’ll let you bring food in and if there’s enough space for it.
Parking
No matter where you’re planning on going, you’ll need a place to park! And if you’re going with a big group this can sometimes be a problem. So make sure there is plenty of parking available so you and your friends don’t end up having to walk several blocks after driving out there.
